Pearl necklace length guide
Necklace length measures along the necklace, usually including the clasp; confirm the seller's convention. It does not measure the vertical drop. Choker, princess, matinee and opera are approximate style names. Neck size, pearl diameter and clothing change where the same length sits.

| Collar | 12–13 | 30–33 | Very close fit; measure carefully |
| Choker | 14–16 | 36–41 | Near the neck on many wearers |
| Princess | 17–19 | 43–48 | Often around the collarbone |
| Matinee | 20–24 | 51–61 | A lower single strand |
| Opera | 28–36 | 71–91 | Long strand; may be layered |
| Rope | Over 36 | Over 91 | Check bulk and layering comfort |
16 vs 18 vs 20 inches
A 16-inch strand may sit close to the neck, an 18-inch strand a little lower, and 20 inches lower again. These are comparisons, not guaranteed positions on every person. Try each over your usual neckline.
A gift is easier to size using a necklace the recipient already wears. If you cannot measure one, confirm exchange terms before choosing a fixed length or ordering custom stringing.
Measure the fit before ordering
Use a flexible tape or non-stretch cord to test the intended path of the necklace without pulling it tight. Then compare the finished measurement of an existing comfortable necklace. A thin cord cannot reproduce the bulk of large pearls, so allow for that difference.
Ask whether the quoted measurement includes the clasp and extender. After restringing, knots and a different clasp can change the finished length. State the desired finished measurement in the repair order.
Long strands and layering
Try an opera or rope length over the actual clothing you plan to wear. Check where clasps and layers meet, whether a loop catches and whether the weight feels comfortable. Do not sharply twist or knot a valuable strand as a styling shortcut.
Choose lengths around your preferred style rather than an assumed rule about age or gender.
Frequently asked questions
Is princess always exactly 18 inches?
No. Length names vary across sellers. Use the stated finished measurement rather than the style name.
Are centimeters converted exactly here?
The table rounds to whole centimeters for comparison. One inch is exactly 2.54 cm; use the seller's actual measurement when ordering.
